You Are Making It Happen
PLAIN TALK ABOUT PALANCA
By: Steve Kemp
We all remember the deluge
of Palanca that we received on our Cursillo Weekends. All of these were a gift to you from other members of the
family you were becoming a part
of. However, there are other forms of
palanca that are even more important, but less apparent.
The
most important form of Palanca is prayer.
On each weekend, we have prayer charts for individuals to sign up and
pray for the participants and teams on the weekend. Each chart contains 144 half-hour slots or 288 total slots in
total. Sadly, many slots go unsigned.
Our
Cursillo Community is nearly 3,000 people.
All the slots would be covered if only 10% of our community's members
would sign up. Signing up is easy. You
can e-mail me at my address in the newsletter, go to an Ultreya, and sign
up. Contact your parish rep and have
them send the information to me. We
need to remember, that you and I are God's Plan A, and he does not have a Plan
B. Part of our apostolic action to which we are called is to pray. Let us give the gift of Prayer to our next
group of participants.
Another
form of Palanca is food gifts. Unlike
most Cursillo movements, the
Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona does not have
Team fees and/or does not charge participants.
Consider how many of us would never had attended Cursillo, if we could
use the excuse of we do not have the money to go. At the same time, God brings so many gifted brothers and sisters
to our teams regardless of their
financial status, I know of men and women who have
given up Saturday work in
order to serve on teams. Do we also want to charge them a fee?
Because we ask each individual parish community to help cover the costs
of food, we do not have to charge fees.
What are these costs? Consider
total team and participants of 80 on a weekend. There are eight meals to be served. At $4.00 a plate the total food cost is $3,200.00, plus some
additional for pop and snacks. The
Total Cost is approximately $3,500.00.
The Secretariat gives each head cook $1,000.00 for food. The remaining $2,500.00 each weekend comes
from Food Palanca.
Of the
approximately 3000 members, I would estimate 600 - 700 who actively
participate. Each weekend we are
looking for the parishes to contribute food or funds in the amount of $4.00 -
$5.00 per active member. We need the
help of all our members, so that this
amount would be $1.00—$1.50. Please
remember that these gifts such as food palanca are as much a part of the love
we give these participants as our notes and letters. So when the palanca committee calls your parish or palanca
representative and they ask you to help with buying an item or two, remember
your weekend and lets pitch in together.
It is the season to remember God’s gift of love,
and as an act of love for him pass our gifts on to those he has chosen to
participate in the coming Cursillo weekends.
Newly
elected to the Secretariat for the term 2003 through 2005, we wish to welcome Donna Blad, Roy
Heidkamp, Dale Anderson and Mike Reed.
It has not been decided at this time
exactly what positions they will be holding, but we know that they will make a
great contribution while they serve your secretariat.
Since our
Weekends are moving to a new Facility, we are faced with some new and different
challenges. To meet these needs it was
decided by Secretariat to Form a Community Team for at least the first few
weekends.
This team will be made up of 10 to 12 people who
will assist with the setting up of beds, various meeting rooms, guidance for
parking at Mananitas and Closura.
This
covers know issues for set up and during the weekend, and taking down and
putting into storage the beds etc.
Those
people who would work on this team, will not stay overnight at the weekend but
will only come long enough to accomplish their needed task and then be free to go home again.
Please
contact Roy Lecker, the Three Day Chairman, @ 480-994-4173 or Email him at
Ralecker@cox.net to sign up for the spring weekends. It is never too early to volunteer, please do this right
away. Remember you do not have to take time off from your job, or be away from home for the
whole weekend
Do you remember the
definition from your weekend?
